In this guide
If you spend hours in spreadsheets fixing formulas, cleaning data or trying to understand a workbook someone else built, Claude for Excel can save you serious time. It's an official add-in from Anthropic that puts Claude inside Excel, where it can read your workbook, answer questions with cell references and help you build or fix formulas. This guide covers installation, requirements, practical prompts, and a free alternative if you're not on a paid plan.
What Claude for Excel can do
According to Anthropic's help center, with Claude for Excel you can:
- Ask questions about your workbook and get answers with cell-level citations.
- Update assumptions while preserving formula dependencies.
- Debug errors and identify their root causes.
- Build new models or fill in existing templates.
- Navigate complex, multi-tab workbooks.
- Use connectors to bring context from other tools into your spreadsheets.
Anthropic says it's designed for people who work extensively with spreadsheets. In practice, it's useful for anyone who has ever stared at #REF! wondering what went wrong.
Requirements
Claude plan
Claude for Excel is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It is not included in the Free plan.
Supported Excel versions
| Platform | Minimum version (per Anthropic) |
|---|---|
| Excel on the web | Supported |
| Excel on Windows | Microsoft 365 subscription, build 16.0.13127.20296 or later |
| Excel on Mac | Version 16.46 or later (build 21011600+) |
| Excel on iPad | Version 2.51 or later |
To check your version on Windows, go to File → Account → About Excel. On Mac, open Excel → About Excel.
How to install Claude for Excel (individual users)
- Go to the Claude by Anthropic listing for Microsoft 365 on Microsoft Marketplace (AppSource). Anthropic links to it from its help center.
- Select Get it now and follow the prompts to install.
- Open Excel and activate the add-in: Home → Add-ins on Windows, or Tools → Add-ins on Mac.
- Sign in with your Claude account.
The Claude panel opens alongside your workbook, and you can start asking questions.
For IT admins: deploying to an organization
Anthropic documents two routes. Through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, make sure "Let users access the Office Store" is enabled, then go to Settings → Integrated apps → Add-ins, find Claude in AppSource and deploy it to all users or specific groups. If Office Store access is disabled, Anthropic provides a custom manifest XML file that admins can upload instead. Anthropic also notes a known Microsoft issue with roles activated through Entra Privileged Identity Management (PIM). Deploy from an account with the role permanently assigned.
10 practical prompts for Claude in Excel
Understanding a workbook
Explain how this workbook is structured. What does each sheet do, and which cells are the main inputs and outputs?
How is the value in Summary!D12 calculated? Trace it back to the input cells.
Fixing errors
Find all cells with errors (#REF!, #VALUE!, #N/A, #DIV/0!) and explain the root cause of each. Suggest a fix but don't change anything yet.
Column F should total the monthly sales but the yearly total looks too low. Find out why.
Writing formulas
In column E, write a formula that returns "Low stock" when quantity in column C is below the reorder level in column D, otherwise "OK".
Create a lookup that brings the product category from the Products sheet into the Orders sheet using the product ID.
Cleaning data
The Customers sheet has duplicates and inconsistent country names. Propose a cleaning plan, then apply it to a new sheet so the original stays untouched.
Building and summarizing
Build a monthly summary of sales by region and product category on a new sheet, with formulas linked to the Data sheet.
Write a short summary of the trends in this data that I could paste into an email to my manager.
Fill in this budget template using the assumptions on the Inputs sheet, keeping all existing formulas intact.
Best practices
- Work on a copy of important files, or rely on version history in OneDrive/SharePoint.
- Ask for explanations before changes. "Explain first, then wait for my OK" keeps you in control.
- Check the cited cells. Claude references specific cells. Click them and confirm.
- Be specific about ranges and sheet names. "Orders!A2:F500" is clearer than "the data".
- Protect sensitive data. Follow your organization's policy before using AI on confidential spreadsheets.
Free alternative: analyze a spreadsheet in a regular Claude chat
Not on a paid plan? You can still get a lot of value:
- Save your sheet as .xlsx or .csv (remove sensitive columns first).
- Open a chat at claude.ai and upload the file.
- Ask questions like: "Summarize this data", "Which products had the biggest drop month to month?" or "Write an Excel formula to do X with columns A to D".
- Copy the suggested formulas back into Excel and test them.
The difference is that a normal chat can't edit your live workbook or cite cells inside Excel. You copy results back yourself. For learning formulas and quick analysis, that's often enough.
Troubleshooting
I can't find the add-in
Check your Excel version meets the minimum, and look under Home → Add-ins (Windows) or Tools → Add-ins (Mac). On work accounts, your admin may have blocked the Office Store.
It says my plan doesn't include it
Make sure you're signed in with the Claude account that has a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan.
Results look wrong
Ask Claude to show its reasoning and the cells it used, check for hidden rows or filters, and confirm number formats (text that looks like numbers is a classic culprit).
